Why WD TV won’t play MKV correctly?
If you have a whole bunch of MKV movie files that cannot be played on WD TV Live, you need know which encoded MKV files are supported by WD TV Live. Although WD TV Live media player has claimed its official support for MKV format. However, your MKV should be encode with H.264, x.264, AVC, MPEG1/2/4, VC-1 codec, if your MKV files contains WD TV Live media player not recognized Divx, H.265 video codec and AC3 audio codec, you will definitely fail to import MKV for playing on WD TV Live. Some DTS encoded MKV files also can’t be supported by WD TV player.
In fact, playing MKV file from local HDD on Windows 8.1 PC is never a problem for WD TV Live Hub. The problem is MKV streaming over the Internet. Basically, with DLNA media devices, there are certificates given to each product that receives DLNA approval. The problem is that .mkv is not one of the media options that are categorized because it’s not a sanctioned format (not like WMV, MPEG, etc.) Besides, MKV is a flexible container format which can store just about anything (H.265, H.264, DivX, MPEG, any sort of audio, even menus and subtitles) while WMV, MPEG is more or less complete formats so they know what to expect while with MKV’s you really can’t tell without checking the contents itself.

If your WDTV Live is not playing mkv or video file at all, the problem is on one or more newer mkv video merged with one the latest version of MKVmerge. When the WDTV Live try to open one of those files, it hang, and can’t play anymore no one files, even if it is power off. The solution to restart the playing function is to press 1 second the reset button when the WDTV is on. Then install (or uninstall from pc MKVmerge version 4.xx), and install a previous version (3.30 for example) open the files that is not playing and save them with another name (for example *.(1), like MKVmerge show). And now try to play this new file, and they and the older MKV are working again. Important, don’t try to preview or play of a non ok mkv file: the WDTV will hang again. Made the same procedure with MKVmerge if the newer files has no audio ouput from TV.
